About the U.Dance National Festival 2022

The U.Dance National Festival 2022 is taking place on stage, on screen and online. It is the largest youth dance festival of its kind in the country and welcomes young dancers from all around the UK.

WHERE: Midlands Arts Centre (otherwise known as ‘MAC’), Birmingham B12 9QH.

The venue sits right on the beautiful Cannon Hill Park which has a boating lake, cafes and even a zoo.

WHEN: 22-24 July 2022

WHAT TO EXPECT: The U.Dance National Festival is a celebration of youth dance. This year’s event will be a weekend packed with performances, workshops, dance careers sessions and lots more. In due course you will have a full schedule provided to you.

Performances

The U.Dance National Showcases are held each evening, featuring the selected groups with some special guest performances. The showcases are different each evening and showcase a wide range of dance styles.

The performance dates and times are:

  • Friday 22 July, 7:30pm
  • Saturday 23 July, 7:30pm
  • Sunday 24 July, 5:30pm

You will have been told whether your group is a FRIDAY performing group, or a WEEKEND performing group.

If you are a FRIDAY performing group, you are requested to attend the full day on Friday 22 July with a performance that evening, and are invited to attend workshops, careers sessions and other activity on Saturday 23 July.

If you are a WEEKEND performing group, you are requested to attend full days on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 July. You will either perform on Saturday 23 July or Sunday 24 July and do workshops, careers sessions and other activity on the other day. This will be confirmed by 12 May. Your group is not required on the Friday, but depending on where you live your group might travel to Birmingham on that day and stay overnight.

Workshops

The U.Dance team is arranging a full menu of amazing dance workshops for participants.

In the coming weeks you will be sent your Workshop Menu and able to select from a range of sessions from a variety of dance styles from the UK’s best dance professionals.

Careers Sessions

As part of the U.Dance National Festival participants will hear from a range of professionals who work in dance but not just as performers. This is an opportunity for participants to learn about some of the wide range of dance career options, talking to leaders in their field.

Other activities

The U.Dance National Festival will be a busy weekend filled with dance challenges, other performances, dance film screenings, a higher education marketplace and much more.

Further details on all activity will be made available in the coming weeks.

Alongside the festival event you are attending, through the month of July there are U.Dance on Screen film showcases at cinema locations and online, and a range of free online dance masterclasses for all young people to view and take part in. All information on these elements of the U.Dance National Festival 2022 can be found on the main event page here.

Video Snapshot

Video Snapshot
Before your performance we will project a title slide listing the group name, region, piece name, choreographer name etc. We would also love a short Video Snapshot introducing your dancers and telling the audience a little bit about the group. This can be as creative and dynamic as you like! It can be quite informal – filmed on a phone is absolutely fine.

A few Video Snapshot guidelines:

  • Maximum 1 minute in length
  • Must be LANDSCAPE alignment (horizontal)
  • Film in a quiet space with people well-lit from the front
  • No music underneath
  • Open your Video Snapshot answering the following prompts:
    • Hello U.Dance National Festival!
    • We are … ___ (group name)
    • We are a … ___ (info about the group)
    • We come from … ___ (home town/region)
    • We meet and rehearse … ___ (info about when you meet, how you rehearse)
    • Then tell us why you love to dance!

Once you have filmed your Video Snapshot, please upload here
This information will be on the Group Leader Information Hub too.
Note: parts of this film may be used on One Dance UK social media channels to share news about the event, so please get in touch if you have issue with this.

Please complete your Video Snapshot by 12 June

Accommodation and Food

All activity at U.Dance National Festival 2022 is free for participants to take part in, and groups are responsible for their own travel to and from Birmingham, food and accommodation. The U.Dance team is working with partners to secure the most cost-effective options for groups. This section has information on accommodation and catering options.

Accommodation for groups attending U.Dance National Festival 2022

Groups are responsible for organising accommodation and travel for the U.Dance National Festival. The U.Dance team has compiled a list of suitable options based on age ranges of your group.

Please be aware that as the Commonwealth Games are taking place in Birmingham the following week, availability in hotels will change as we approach the festival, so we would recommend booking sooner rather than later.

We would also recommend booking via a third party website, to get the best available rates as some hotels may inflate their prices if you call directly. Try www.hotelscombined.com which collates the best prices from all major booking websites. Most hotels do have a group booking system for larger groups, however the quoted costs may be more than what is offered via third party sites.

As Birmingham is so centrally located, groups within an hour or so drive from the city may wish to consider commuting as a cost-effective alternative. Parking will be available close to the MAC on the weekend of the festival.

Accommodation suggestions are listed below with distance from the MAC by taxi.

For groups aged 18+

Premier Inn have the best rates currently, however all rooms must be occupied by at least one person aged 18 or above. This would be the best option for groups with older participants and for parents or guardians looking to come along.

Premier Inn Broad Street, B16 8AL (11 min drive)

Premier Inn Waterloo Street, B2 5PG (13 min drive)

Other hotels that have an 18+ policy on guests in rooms include: EasyHotel, IBIS Styles, IBIS Budget, Hilton.

For groups aged 16+

Travelodge and Jury’s Inn both have a policy that allows for attendees in rooms aged 16+, as long as the group is accompanied by an adult chaperone.

The U.Dance team has secured a limited allocation of rooms at a fixed rate at Travelodge Central Newhall Street.

To book, please use this link: https://www.incorporatevenues.com/public/b/3829/

All bookings made via this link must be completed no later than midday on Friday 13 May. Our special allocation is held until then and any cancellations made after this date cannot be refunded.

All groups are responsible for their own food at the U.Dance National Festival 2022.

Groups should have breakfast before arrival for each day’s activity.
